Each week over the next two months we will be sharing what is behind the songs from our first two albums “Lifted High” and “O Great Love: The Acoustic Sessions.” With new music coming in 2015 we thought it would be fun to go back and talk about our last projects and what inspires the songs we write.
I love a good love song.
Expressing your heart to another person wrapped in melody, rhythm, and time has incredible power. It moves us. It fills the radio. It sells records.
But we serverly short-change the Creator of the Universe if the entirety of our worship is reduced to a love song.
There is no love song my heart knows, That’s even a shadow
Of the One who set my feet on a rock
Of the overwhelming grace of my God
Consider the hymn of praise Paul wrote to the Romans in his letter (11:33-35).
“Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!
“For who has known the mind of the Lord,
or who has been his counselor?”
“Or who has given a gift to him
that he might be repaid?”
As a worshipper of a great, glorious God I find myself grasping for a deeper expression. Humanity is finite. God is infinite.
Even the most compelling naratives of literature, or the most enduring tales of conquest and valor, or the most universal sonnets of human love cannot compare to our reedeeming King.
There is no story, no hero, That ever could come close
To the hope that’s found in my Savior’s cross
To the overwhelming grace of my God
As a band we strive to do more than produce “God is my girlfriend/boyfriend” songs where you might be singing about Jesus or you might be singing about Jane.
Like I said I love a good love song. I also know that the church needs more than just love
